ABEOKUTA, Nigeria — The management of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Ogun State has accused operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of carrying out a violent, unauthorised raid on its premises in the early hours of Saturday, August 9, 2025.
In a statement on Sunday, August 10, 2025, the library said more than 50 armed men stormed the complex around 2 a.m., “firing gunshots, threatening to kill people, and causing panic among guests and residents.”
The team, reportedly led by a man identified only as “Olapade,” allegedly targeted a private event at the library’s amusement facility.
The EFCC confirmed on Saturday, August 9, 2025, that it had arrested 93 suspected internet fraudsters during a raid on a hotel in Abeokuta but did not name the location.
According to OOPL management, the operatives claimed to be acting on an intelligence tip and said the police had been informed of the operation.
However, police officers stationed at the library gates, as well as additional personnel from Kemta Police Station invited by event organisers, denied having prior knowledge of the raid.
The management said the EFCC team did not present a search or arrest warrant.
The statement alleged that the raid left several people injured as attendees fled in panic.
“The invasion, led by one ‘Olapade,’ caused serious panic and chaos, leading to serious injuries among participants trying to escape the shooting and near carnage that resulted, and causing terror among residents on the site,” it read.
The library described the incident as “a clear case of invasion of private property” and a violation of the rights of its guests.
Management said it had begun its own investigation and would take the matter to “the highest authorities,” including the EFCC, the police, and the Department of State Services.
It demanded an explanation and an apology from the EFCC, warning that failure to address the “infringement of rights” would compel the institution to “seek redress and sanctions as appropriate.”
