IBADAN, Nigeria — Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State, has declared his intention to contest Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election under the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement, APM, signalling a major political shift amid ongoing realignments within the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Oyo State.
Makinde announced his decision during a political rally held at Mapo Hall in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, where supporters and members of allied political groups gathered as discussions over coalition arrangements ahead of the next general election intensified.
“I, Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde, Excellency, announce my candidacy for the position of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the governor said at the rally.
The declaration followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party in Oyo State aligned with Taminu Turaki and the Allied Peoples Movement.
Under the agreement, members of the PDP faction seeking elective offices in the 2027 elections are expected to contest on the platform of the APM rather than the PDP.
The arrangement covers candidates for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly positions.
The development marks a significant departure from the PDP structure in the state and comes amid broader political repositioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
