Must read

NAN – The UN has said that President Goodluck Jonathan’s ability to delivered credible elections in Nigeria on two occasions was a healthy development for democracy in Africa.

The special envoy of the UN Secretary-General to Nigeria, Mr Mohammed Ibn Chamba, said on Thursday in Abuja while addressing newsmen.

Jonathan first conducted an election in 2011 which according to global community was fair and credible though, with post-election violence.

According to him, Jonathan is exceptionally gracious and a statesman by conceding a defeat at the just-concluded presidential poll.

“Let us be fair to him. This not the first election Jonathan will be conducting. In 2011 he conducted an election adjudged by international observers to be credible.

“In 2015 he did the same thing by keeping to his promise to deliver a credible poll,” he said.

Chambas said that given the strategic leadership role of Nigeria in Africa, Nigeria and its leaders should continue strive towards leading the way in civilian rule.

“We have said it before that we expect good examples from Nigeria and that is what we are seeing today,” he said.

Chambas congratulated retired Gen. Muhamadu Buhari, on his election as Nigeria’s next president.
