UYO, Nigeria — Renowned Nigerian evangelist and founder of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association (UUEA), Dr. Uma Ukpai, has died at the age of 80.

In a statement released on Monday, October 13, 2025, Ukpai’s family confirmed that he passed away on Monday, October 6, 2025, describing his death as a “glorious transition” from a life of service to eternal rest.

“He was a faithful soldier of the cross who devoted his life to spreading the gospel with passion and integrity,” the family said.

“His teachings, prophetic insights, and mentorship have left a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire believers for years to come.”

Ukpai, one of Nigeria’s most respected Christian leaders, was known for his fiery preaching, healing crusades, and unwavering commitment to evangelism.

Over a ministry career spanning more than six decades, he preached across Nigeria and internationally, leading countless revival meetings and outreach programmes.

Born in 1945, Ukpai founded the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, a non-denominational gospel ministry headquartered in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The UUEA became a major force in Nigeria’s evangelical movement, combining large-scale crusades with humanitarian work and leadership training.

His ministry extended beyond evangelism to education and social development initiatives across Africa, reflecting his belief that faith must be accompanied by compassion and service.

Ukpai’s family described him as “a spiritual general, loving husband, devoted father, and mentor to many who looked to him for guidance in faith and life.”

They added that while they mourn his passing, they are comforted by the belief that he has “finished his race and is now resting in eternal praise.”

A central figure in the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Ukpai was part of the founding leadership that helped shape the organisation’s early mission and influence.

His work contributed to the expansion of Pentecostalism across Nigeria in the 1980s and 1990s.

Throughout his life, Ukpai was known for his emphasis on faith, healing, and the power of the Holy Spirit.

His messages consistently focused on hope, holiness, and divine empowerment.

The family said details of his funeral arrangements will be announced later.

In their statement, they cited Philippians 1:21 — “To live is Christ, and to die is gain” — as a verse that summed up his life and ministry.

Ukpai is survived by his wife, Pastor Philomena Uma Ukpai, their children, and grandchildren.
