A Catholic Reverend Father was over the weekend, assassinated by yet-to-be-identified persons at a bush path in Owerri, Imo State capital.
Details of the deceased priest are yet to be determined as at the time of the report, although it was gathered that he was also an academic staff of Imo State Polytechnic, Umuagwo, in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of the state.
Confirming the incident, the Police Spokesperson, DSP Andrew Enwerem, said the priest was assassinated in a bush path, adding that the police are suspecting that it was a clear case of assassination.
Enwerem said, “The priest on his Toyota SUV was murdered along a very lonely bush path that would have led him into Port Harcourt Road.
“I wonder why the Catholic priest chose to use such a lonely bush path, knowing fully, the recent ceaseless bickering and wrangling stemming from Imo Polytechnic.”
The police mouthpiece added that nobody has been yet arrested in connection with the death even though they have recovered the vehicle.
The police patrol teams were also reportedly dispatched to the area as soon as the information got to their desk, adding that they had expanded their search to all corners of the state and were following all available leads towards tracking down the culprits.
He said, “It was a gruesome murder. There is the likelihood that the assassins carefully monitored the priest’s movement and laid ambush for him on his track.
“The youths of the community joined the police in searching the surrounding bushes. The hoodlums simply perfected and carried out their damnable act before waning into the reedy air.”
