A US hostage has been killed during a botched rescue attempt in Yemen, the FBI has said.

Luke Somers, a 33-year-old photojournalist, was being held by al Qaida in the countries capital of Sana’a when American agents tried to rescue him.

He was abducted in September 2013.

Footage was released earlier this week of Islamic militants threatening to kill Mr Somers, who was born in Britain, if their demands were not met.

Luke himself appeared in the video.

The family of Mr Somers responded with their own video in which they asked the militants to ‘show mercy’.

The Pentagon also confirmed US agents were involved in an attempted rescue earlier this year however they were unsuccessful.
