A 28-year-old security guard, Mohammed Abu, was arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State on Wednesday, August 5, 2015 for allegedly raping and impregnating a 16-year-old girl.
Abu who is facing a charge of defilement committed the offence at his residence at No. 38, Adebola Street Anifowoshe area in Ikeja.
According to the Prosecutor, Insp. Rachael Williams, the accused committed the crime on Monday, June 1 2015.
Speaking at the court, Williams said, “The victim, a 16-year-old girl, was returning from school when the accused called her under the pretext of asking her for a direction.
“Before she knew what was happening, he had raped her and told her not to tell anyone. It was a month after the incident that she discovered that she had missed her period.”
The offence, breached the dictates of Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011 which prescribes life imprisonment for the offence.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty and a lieu with the plea, the Chief Magistrate, Mr Tajudeen Elias, granted him bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
He adjourned the case for further mention until Wednesday, September 2, 2015.
