Seun Kuti’s Remand Extended for 48 Hours As Police Seek Time for ‘Further Investigation’

Must read

LAGOS, Nigeria — The arrest of Seun Kuti, one of Africa’s most renowned Afrobeat performers, has stirred public attention once more as Sabo-Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court granted a four-day extension to his remand on Thursday, May 18, 2023.

Chief Magistrate Mrs Adeola Olatubosun upheld the application put forth by Simon Lough, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), leading a police legal team.

Olatubosun extended Kuti’s remand until May 23, 2023, to provide additional time for an ongoing investigation into an alleged assault against a police officer.

The Nigerian Afrobeat artist stands accused of the assault which allegedly took place on Lagos’ Third Mainland Bridge on May 13, 2023.

The prosecution claims that Kuti acted recklessly, driving in a dangerous manner before halting a moving police vehicle and slapping the inspector on duty.

“Mr. Kuti’s actions pose a serious concern and require thorough scrutiny. The extension allows us to explore every facet of this case in pursuit of justice,” said Lough, articulating the reasons behind the remand extension.

Kuti’s initial arraignment occurred on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, when the Chief Magistrate ordered a 48-hour remand and postponed the case until May 22, 2023.

The news of Kuti’s alleged misconduct and subsequent legal proceedings has sent ripples across the Afrobeat music community, both in Nigeria and globally.

His fans eagerly await the court’s decision, and it’s anticipated that the next few days will offer a clearer perspective on this unfolding case.

As the case continues to develop, Kuti’s music — characterized by impassioned lyrics and infectious rhythms that encapsulate social and political commentary — has been cast into a new and somewhat somber light.

The legacy of his father, Fela Kuti, Afrobeat pioneer and human rights activist, further amplifies the resonance of this unfolding story.

On May 22, 2023, the court is scheduled to mention Kuti’s case again, a date which has now become a focal point for the Afrobeat community worldwide.

The implications of this case remain significant, given Kuti’s influence on the music genre and the fact that it involves a figure who, like his father, is no stranger to clashes with authorities.
