While many people all across the globe have been calling for the return of the Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram three months ago, none have gone to the extent of Adokiye Kyrian. The 23-year old Nigerian singer, who is also a UN Ambassador of Peace, has caused a social media firestorm by offering her virginity to Boko Haram in exchange for the kidnapped girls.
Kyrian stated to the Nigerian publication Vanguard, “It is just unfair. They are too young. I wish I could offer myself in exchange.” She went on to state, “They are between 12 and 15 years old girls for Christ sake. I am older and more experienced. Even if 10 to 12 men have to take me every night, I don’t care. Just release these girls and let them go back to their parents.”
While some have praised Kyrian as a hero, many have responded to her offer by saying that she was simply seeking media attention. Others have even questioned whether or not the singer is actually a virgin. One Twitter comment read, “Adokiye Kyrian is really hungry for attention and in the process insulting the world’s call to Boko Haram to #BringBackOurGirls.”
One Twitter user remarked on Kyrian claiming to be a virgin, stating, “So this Adokiye girl wants us to believe she’s a virgin? Uh cmon!”
Others have offered to join Kyrian in her offer. Twitter user The Village Girl stated, “I share the same sentiments with Adokiye Kynon, Boko Haram must bring back those girls I for one can take their place if he needs sëx.”
Fueling speculation that Kyrian’s offer is more selfish than selfless, the New York Daily News is reporting that she made the same offer of her virginity for anyone willing to buy her mother a private jet.
