Matthew 13:55-56 ERV “Isn’t he just the son of the carpenter we know? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas? And don’t all his sisters still live here in town? How is he able to do these things?”
The Scripture says that Jesus went to the town where He grew up. He taught the people in the synagogue, and they were amazed. They said, “Where did this man get such wisdom and this power to do miracles?”
Familiarity breeds contempt. Just because they knew Jesus’ story, they knew that He did not attend school, they knew His family background, they did not understand why God would elevate the son of a carpenter and make Him better than them and their own children; so they were envious and did not honour Him as they should. Who lost? They did! Jesus did not do miracles there because they did not believe in Him.
There are some of you reading this; God is going to set you apart from your family members, your neighbours, your colleagues and your peers; in a few years from now, you are going to be many times bigger than them all – richer, powerful and influential! What God will do with you will be amazing. They might hate you for it, but there’s nothing they would be able to do about it! It would be the Lord’s doing, and it will be marvellous in the eyes of all! Hallelujah!
