Egyptian Student, 21, Sentenced To 3 Years In Jail For Atheist Posts On Facebook

A young student, Karim Ashraf Mohammed al Banna has received a three-year jail term for allegedly sharing posts that ‘insult’ Islam via his Facebook page.

al Banna was arrested in November 2014 by the police after he went to complain about the harassment he got from his atheist views on Facebook.

But instead he himself was arrested, and held in custody until his trial in the Nile Delta province of Baheria, Egypt according to Sky News.His father testified against him in the court during the case hearing where it was revealed that he had published Facebook posts which were “insulting” to Islam.

The man reportedly disclosed in court that his son was “embracing extremist ideas against Islam.”

Explaining the outcome of the trial, a 21-year-old lawyer, identified as Ahmed Abdel Nabi, said,

“He was handed down a three-year prison sentence, and if he pays a bail of 1,000 Egyptian pounds the sentence can be suspended until a verdict is issued by an appeals court.”

The constitution of Egypt does not tolerate insult on people’s religion whether Islam, Christianity and Judaism
