Suspect Arrested In Murder Of University Of Calabar Lecturer

A final year Microbiology student of  the University of Calabar, was arrested by the Cross River State Police Command over the alleged murder of  of a lecturer in the department, Dr. Godwin Iwatt, who was shot on May 6, 2014.

Iwatt, who was the examination officer in the department, later died on May 15, 2014 at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital after all efforts to save his life failed due to the severity of his injuries.

A policeman in the unit, who pleaded anonymity, reported that “The killer has been arrested. He said the shooting was done with the assistance of three other students who are yet to be arrested.”

The suspect was traced through several death threat messages he sent to the deceased, who allegedly refused to help  him clear his carryovers to enable him proceed for the national youth service.

According to the state police public relations officer, Mr. Hogan Bassey, “When the suspect was arrested, he denied knowledge of the shooting, but when he was confronted with the evidences, including the text messages, he confessed that he was the culprit along with three others.”

Mr Bassey added that, “The principal suspect has been arrested, but investigation is still ongoing.”
