Tsunami Advisory Lifted After 6.8 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Japan

Must read

TOKYO, Japan – The Japan Meteorological Agency lifted a tsunami advisory on Monday, January 13, 2025, night following a strong earthquake off the coast of Japan’s Miyazaki Prefecture.

The quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8, struck at approximately 9:19 p.m. local time.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake’s epicenter was located just offshore at a depth of about 19 miles.

It registered an intensity of lower 5 on Japan’s seismic scale, which ranges from 0 to 7.

The quake triggered a tsunami advisory for Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures, with initial warnings of waves reaching about 1 meter.

By 10 p.m., one tsunami wave measuring approximately 8 inches reached some coasts and ports, prompting authorities to caution residents to stay away from waterways and coastal areas.

Evacuations and Safety Measures

In Kochi Prefecture, some residents were advised to evacuate as a precaution. Authorities also halted train services in affected regions, with no immediate timeline for resumption.

While no significant damage or injuries have been reported, residents were urged to remain cautious of potential aftershocks, debris, and broken glass.

Officials confirmed that there were no abnormalities in radiation levels or operations at regional nuclear power plants, easing concerns about any broader safety risks.

Ongoing Monitoring

Japanese meteorological officials continued gathering data on the quake’s effects and urged vigilance against further disruptions.

“Residents should stay in safe places and remain alert for aftershocks,” the agency advised.

The earthquake is a stark reminder of Japan’s vulnerability to seismic activity, given its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire.

The nation remains well-prepared, with robust early-warning systems and protocols that help mitigate potential disasters.

As of now, authorities are working to restore normalcy while monitoring for any further developments.
