The Katsina State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of one Yusuf Sarkin Gida, a domestic worker to the wife of late President Umaru Yar’Adua, Hajiya Turai Yar’Adua, for allegedly stealing N91 million from her.
The commissioner of police, Usman Abdullahi Mohammed, who confirmed the development, said a formal complaint was received before his arrest.
“We are investigating the matter and all the facts are not available yet. It will actually surprise you to know that the man has been serving the family for over 40 years,” he said.
The former first lady has also handed over to the police another domestic staff, 70-year-old Malam Yusuf Jikwando, and his two sons, for alleged theft of foodstuffs and an undisclosed amount of money.
It was gathered that the arrest followed Turai’s directive to the Commissioner of Police.A man close to the family said five armed policemen invaded Jikwando’s house and searched it, but only found three measures of rice and a quarter bag of maize.
According to him, Jikwando’s eldest son and second to the last born were later arrested. He said while Jikwando’s family members and relatives tried to go and see the former first lady in Abuja over the arrests, five people, among them the man’s wife, had an accident near Kankara village.
The Jikwando family members appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari, governor of Katsina State, Bello Masari and the Human Rights Commission to come to their aid. When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Salisu Agaisa, said he was not aware of the arrests.
