LAGOS – It was victory yesterday for Terna Tarka at a Federal High Court in Lagos as Justice Mohammed Idris declared ‘unlawful and ultra vires’ the decision by the National Youth Services Corps (NYSC) to deny some graduates from participating in the compulsory National Youth Services Programme because they did not score a credit pass in Mathematics at their Senior Secondary School Certificate.
Mr. Tarka has filed a suit against the chairman of the National Directorate of NYSC, and the minister, Ministry of Education, as second and third defendants respectively.
But come to think of it, what is the NYSC’s business with somebody’s secondary school result? We thought they deal with university graduates. We thought this policy was overreach on the part of the NYSC and we are glad an affected youth corps member had the courage to challenge the policy in court and we are double glad he won.
