The University of Agriculture, Makurdi has been shut down following students’ protests over the death of their colleagues who were knocked down by a commercial bus, the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports.

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, who visited the school on Wednesday, August 15, 2018, met students racing out of the premises to meet the deadline given them to vacate.

Rosemary Waku, the institution’s information officer, who spoke on the development, said that the measure became necessary to avert an escalation of the protests which could lead to the destruction of property.

“The management reviewed the situation and resolved to close the school before the protest snowballs into something uncontrollable,” she told NAN.

She described the incident as “`regrettable”, but called for more restraint while the matter was being addressed.

Narrating how the accident happened, she said that a commercial vehicle conveying students to school had a burst tyre, veered off its lane and hit two students on a motorcycle.

The duo died on the spot.

Waku said that the school was about to commence the semester examinations when the unfortunate incident occurred.
