Oshodi Traders Lament Lagos Gov’t Action To Destroy Shops, Goods [WATCH]

The Lagos State Government has announced the shutdown of the popular Oshodi Market in Lagos over “insecurity”. But the traders say that they were not given any kind of notice to vacate the market ahead of the demotion.

The traders say that the government demolition agents took them by surprise and even prevented them from removing their goods from their shops.

A man, who identified as a special advisor to the former Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola is seen in the Sahara Reporters video below, denouncing the methods of the Akinwunmi Ambode led government in carrying out the demolition exercise. He says that the traders’ unions ought to have been engaged and an alternative location created for the traders before this exercise was carried out.

Some men could be seen trying to salvage some items from the rubble.

Most of the affected traders appear to be indigenes of the South East states.

Lagos State Government on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 shut Owonifari market within the notorious loop of Oshodi, Oshodi/Isolo Local Government, aimed at addressing the security challenges in the axis.

It will be recalled that the State Government often arrest hoodlums in Oshodi to stern the activities of petty thieves who often deprive commuters of their property.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, who disclosed this, lamented that the market has constituted a menace and an eyesore within the locality.

Ayorinde noted that they have relocated affected traders and shop owners to the newly built Isopakodowo market stalls at Bolade area in Oshodi.

The government has also commenced the fencing-off of the set-back on Agege Motor Road that stretches from Ilupeju end of Oshodi all the way to the PWD/Ikeja GRA end of the area.

According to the statement, the Owonifari loop will be transformed into an ultra modern bus terminus with new bus shelters that are befitting of a structured park in a mega city.
