The bodies of 11 members of one family were found in their home in the Indian capital by police on Sunday, July 1, 2018.

“Ten of the bodies were blindfolded and were hanging from a grille ceiling [metal mesh ceiling] to an open area and one – that of an elderly woman – was found in a room,” said Rajesh Khurana, joint commissioner of police.

The dead – seven women and four men – all belonged to a single family that lived in the two-storey house in Buran area of North Delhi, Khurana said. Three of the dead were teenagers.

“The bodies have been sent for autopsy. We are investigating all possible angles,” Khurana said. Police did not comment on whether the family members had hung themselves, and Khurana said no suicide note had been found.

Two of the men were brothers – a carpenter and a grocer – who ran their businesses from the same premise where they had been living for over two decades, IANS news agency reported.

The elderly lady was their mother while the others were their sister, wives, and children.

A neighbour went to buy milk from the grocery store on the ground floor of the house and finding it closed past the usual opening time, walked up the stairs and saw the hanging bodies and informed the police, NDTV news channel reported.

“Neighbours are saying there was no stress in the family, they were good, friendly people,” Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who visited the site, said. “Police are not ruling out anything.”
