2 Feared Dead As SUV, Bus Plunge Into Lagos Canal (PHOTO)

Two people were feared dead while one was critically injured, Saturday night, when a Sports Utility Van, SUV, and a staff bus belonging to a private company plunged into a Lagos canal.

According to an eye witness’ account, the victims, all males, were occupants of the SUV with number plate FKJ 516 AL, while the injured person was the driver of the staff bus who was said to have lost a hand and leg to the incident which took place around 10pm at Pleasure/Iyana-Ipaja area of Lagos. General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Authority LASEMA, Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed the incident to Vanguard said both victims were members of an Islamic organisation, Samsideen Islamiya who were said to be coming from Ikorodu when the incident occurred.

‘’At about 10pm Saturday night a Pathfinder SUV collided with a bus at Pleasure bus-stop inward Abule Egba and fell into a canal. “Bodies of the two occupants were recovered by LASEMA and handed over to appropriate authorities.

‘’The car driver, Muyideen Tiamiyu, 50, and vehicle owner Alhaji Akinsola, were said to have experienced a tyre blowout when the staff bus which was avoiding a sharp corner hit them and both landed in a canal leaving both occupants of the bus dead and the bus driver critically injured.”

The victims were said to have been buried according to Muslim rites; while Muyideen was buried at Shasha area of Lagos, Akinsola was said to have been buried at Ilepa, Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State. The LASEMA boss also said he was not aware of the present condition of the bus driver as he was not privy to the information.

He said: ‘’I cannot speak about the condition of the bus driver because I did not witness the incident but the information at hand said two occupants of the SUV did not survive the incident.’’ According to him, both vehicles and victims were recovered around 3pm of yesterday and handed over to appropriate authorities.
