AWKA, Nigeria – A 50-year-old woman has been detained for allegedly brutalizing her elderly mother in Umudunu village, Abagana, within Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The suspect, identified as Ukamaka Udeugbo, reportedly flogged and kicked her septuagenarian mother repeatedly while the latter lay naked on the floor.
Reports also indicate that Udeugbo poured buckets of water on her mother during the abuse.
The State Police spokesperson, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, confirmed the incident.
According to him, the state’s commissioner of police, Aderemi Adeoye, has directed the case to be transferred to the State CID for further investigation and instructed the victim to be placed under the care of the Commissioner for Women Affairs.
Tochukwu said, “On July 15, 2023, men of Anambra State Police Command attached to Abagana Division rescued an aged woman being cruelly treated by another woman at Umudunu village, Abagana. The suspect, Ukamaka Udeugbo, who is 50 years old, turned out to be the victim’s biological daughter, as seen in a video clip that went viral.”
“The suspect, who was seen in the video flogging and pouring water on the naked aged woman while she was lying on the floor, has been arrested and detained pending prosecution,” he added.
“CP Aderemi Adeoye directed that the case be transferred to the State CID in the public interest.
“He also authorised for the elderly woman to be handed over to the Commissioner for Women Affairs for adequate care provided by the Anambra State Government.
“The suspect will be arraigned in court after the investigation,” the police spokesperson revealed.
The Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, reacted to the incident by expressing concern about the increasing cases of abuse in the state, warning that offenders would face the full weight of the law.
Ms Obinabo also stated that the victim is currently undergoing medical examination and treatment in a hospital.
