NEW YORK, USA – The Netherlands’ Abdi Nageeye and Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui emerged victorious in a thrilling New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 3, 2024, with both runners delivering exceptional performances to clinch their titles in the men’s and women’s races, respectively.

In the men’s race, Nageeye claimed victory with a powerful sprint finish, clocking a time of 2:07.39 to edge past Kenya’s Evans Chebet, who finished six seconds behind.

Chepkirui marked her marathon debut in style, taking the women’s title after pulling away from defending champion Hellen Obiri in the closing stages.

Finishing with a time of 2:24.35, Chepkirui’s victory fulfilled her status as a race favourite. Obiri crossed the line 15 seconds behind, with Vivian Cheruiyot placing third, securing an all-Kenyan podium.

USA’s Romanchuk and Scaroni Dominate Wheelchair Races

In the men’s wheelchair division, Daniel Romanchuk of the United States claimed his first New York City Marathon victory since 2019, ending Swiss athlete Marcel Hug’s remarkable 16-race winning streak.

Romanchuk outpaced Britain’s David Weir in a close finish, winning by a margin of five seconds, while Japan’s Tomoki Suzuki finished in third, seven seconds behind Weir.

The women’s wheelchair race saw an equally impressive win by Romanchuk’s compatriot, Susannah Scaroni, who crossed the finish line more than 10 minutes ahead of the competition.

This marked a historic moment as both men’s and women’s wheelchair races were won by Americans for the first time in the event’s history.

Reflecting on her performance, Scaroni said, “Always so special to be here in New York City… Coming up the last hill we had a tailwind today. So I had a little more energy than I normally do at that hill.”

The 2024 New York City Marathon saw a series of impressive performances, with high-paced finishes and records set across the board, solidifying its reputation as one of the world’s most exciting marathon events.
