Akpabio Decries ‘Culture of Opportunism’ in Nigeria’s Governance Landscape

Must read

ABUJA, Nigeria – The President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio delivered a pointed critique of sycophancy in government during an interactive session organised by the Senate Committee on Appropriation in Abuja.

Speaking amidst deliberations on Nigeria’s proposed ₦49.7 trillion 2025 budget, Akpabio condemned political appointees who prioritise personal gain over genuine service to the nation.

A “Culture of Opportunism”

Akpabio highlighted what he termed a “culture of opportunism” within Nigeria’s political landscape, criticising officials who align themselves with their appointors for personal benefit while neglecting their duties.

“They plan their moves, align their turns, and grow their pockets—but not the nation. This is a grave disservice,” Akpabio said.

He further decried the behaviour of appointees who demonstrate diligence only in the presence of their leaders, neglecting their responsibilities when unsupervised.

In contrast, Akpabio praised a minority of officials who display consistent dedication to their duties.

“When an appointee works with the same passion in the absence of their leader, it reflects loyalty to the country, not just self-interest,” he noted.

Criticism of Public Misconceptions

Akpabio also addressed what he called uninformed public criticism, particularly on social media, of critical legislative processes such as budget reviews and tax reforms.

“This is the forum for constructive input,” he stated, referring to the public budget hearing.

“Social media is not a replacement for understanding the intricacies of governance. Our task is formidable but achievable, and we must approach it with informed determination.”

He urged Nigerians to engage meaningfully with legislative processes and to contribute ideas rather than spreading misinformation online.

The 2025 Budget: A “Portal of Restoration”

The Senate President described the 2025 Appropriation Bill as a “Portal of Restoration,” emphasising its potential to ignite prosperity, secure peace, and build economic resilience.

The budget hearing brought together lawmakers, ministry officials, and civil society representatives to align fiscal priorities with national goals.

Akpabio stressed the need for accountability and collaboration in governance to achieve sustainable development and national unity.

A Call for Integrity and Accountability

Akpabio’s remarks underscored the importance of integrity and loyalty in public service. He called for a cultural shift in governance, urging political appointees to prioritise the nation’s interests over personal ambitions.

“We are custodians of Nigeria’s destiny, and our responsibility is to rise above personal interests to shape a better future,” Akpabio declared.

He reaffirmed the legislature’s commitment to a transparent and inclusive budget process, positioning it as a cornerstone for sustainable growth and a more united Nigeria.

As Nigeria grapples with fiscal challenges, Akpabio’s address serves as a rallying cry for reform and accountability, emphasising the need for collective efforts to secure the nation’s future.
