GUSAU, Nigeria — Kachalla Sani Yellow, a bandit commander accused of directing kidnappings, livestock theft and attacks on communities across Zamfara State, has reportedly been killed in an ambush involving local security volunteers.
PRNigeria reported on Sunday, July 12, 2026, that Yellow was intercepted during an intelligence-led operation after entering a local market.
According to security and community sources cited by the publication, he had gone there to collect money from stolen livestock and negotiate payments for the release of kidnapping victims.
“He was positively identified through local intelligence. Once his identity was confirmed, the hybrid forces moved swiftly and neutralised him before he could escape,” one source told PRNigeria.
The publication said the operation involved a hybrid force made up of local volunteers and former insurgents from north-eastern Nigeria who had surrendered and were assisting security agencies in some operational areas.
The precise circumstances of the killing have not been publicly established by the authorities.
A video obtained by PRNigeria appeared to show armed volunteers celebrating as what the publication identified as Yellow’s body was pulled behind a motorcycle along a road.
Intelligence From Local Communities
Security and community sources said the volunteer forces had increasingly relied on information supplied by residents to follow the movements of armed groups.
The operations have included ambushes against bandit convoys, attacks on supply routes and efforts to locate commanders accused of organising violence against rural settlements.
Yellow was described by the sources as a prominent commander whose network operated in forested areas covering Anka, Bukkuyum and Maru Local Government Areas, as well as surrounding parts of Zamfara.
He was accused of planning raids on villages, organising kidnappings for ransom and overseeing the theft of cattle. Community sources also accused members of his group of abusing captives and committing sexual violence against women who had been abducted.
The allegations against Yellow were based on accounts from security and community sources. No record of a conviction was provided.
Yellow was also reported to have been related to Kachalla Yellow Danbokolo, another bandit commander said to have been killed in 2025 during an operation by the Shinkafi Yan Sakai Volunteer Forces. More than 170 fighters were reportedly killed in that operation.
Security Increased Over Reprisal Fears
A senior defence intelligence source told PRNigeria that security agencies were following developments after Yellow’s reported death.
The official, who was not named because he was not authorised to speak publicly, said surveillance had been increased in communities considered vulnerable to retaliatory attacks by members of Yellow’s organisation.
“The security architecture is already on alert. Necessary deployments have been made to protect vulnerable communities and respond promptly to any attempted reprisal,” the source said.
Security personnel and local volunteer groups have been conducting operations against armed gangs that use forest settlements across Zamfara and neighbouring states as bases for kidnappings, village raids and livestock theft.
The sources said continuing intelligence-based operations would be necessary to disrupt the remaining commanders and supply networks connected to the armed groups.
