Benue: Court Summons Impeached Speaker Terkimbi Ikyange, Others

Must read

Theresa Igoche, a judge of the High Court sitting in Makurdi has on Wednesday, August 1, 2018, summoned Terkimbi Ikyange, the impeached Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, to appear before it within seven days.

The court also summoned the deputy, James Okefe, and the majority leader, Benjamin Adanyi before it. The court summoned them to come and explain why they should not be thrown to prison over contempt of court.

Recall that the court had, Friday last week, given an order restraining the parties from parading themselves as the principal officers of the state house of assembly and as their impeached positions, respectively.

While ruling on an application filed against the impeached members who are under the All Progressives Congress, APC, party, by 22 members of the house who are under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Justice Igoche further reinstated the earlier order restraining the impeached members from parading themselves as principal members of the house.

Recall that the impeached Speaker, Ikyange, and seven other APC house members had, few days ago, served an illegal impeachment notice on the state governor, Samuel Ortom for dumping the ruling APC.

The illegal notice was opposed by the other members of the house who later suspended the members for six months. Meanwhile, the Benue House of Assembly is currently shutdown by the police.
