Must read

Following the Benue/Fulani crisis, the Anglican Bishop of Makurdi, Rev Nathan Inyom during a press conference yesterday Thursday, April 3, 2014 asked the Ministry of Bureau for Conflict Resolution to set up a policy on conflict resolution to stop the loss of lives as a results of these crises in the country.

He showed great displeasure about the state of things in Benue state and why the Federal Government has not taken serious measures to stop the crises.

Rev Inyom also advised the Governments to deal with this issue from its root cause, in this case being the farmers and herdsmen.

Sun reports:

Anglican bishop of Makurdi, Rev. Nathan Inyom has canvassed the establishment of a Ministry of Bureau for Conflict Resolution by the Federal Government to stem the tide of incessant crises across the country.

Inyom, who made the call yesterday during a press conference on Fulani attack on Tiv communities wondered why it was taking the Federal Government too long to have a policy on conflict resolution in spite of the many lives that were  being lost as a result of conflicts across the country.

“Why is it taking government so long to have a policy on conflict resolution despite the fact that many lives are daily being lost across the country due to conflict? I was part of a committee that drew up a document on conflict resolution in Ilorin some years back. I think government should at this point, look into that document and set up a ministry or bureau for conflict resolution.

The Anglican Bishop who lamented that the Benue /Fulani crisis had affected the church in so many ways however, commended the Federal Government for instituting a peace process with a view to resolving the lingering problem.

While describing the personalities involved in the peace pact as people of reputable character, Inyom who posited that in conflict resolution, there was the need to look into the root cause, however, noted that the agreement did not look into the immediate and remote causes of the crisis.

He  maintained that since the conflict was between farmers and herdsmen, the President of Farmers Association should have been invited just like the president of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) was present at the peace meeting.
