ASABA, Nigeria — Police in Delta State have arrested a 16-year-old boy after another teenager alleged that she was assaulted by two boys at a hotel in Ughelli and filmed during the encounter.
The 16-year-old girl told investigators that she had been invited to the hotel by a friend but arrived to find two other boys in a room.
She alleges that she was struck, forced to undress, and sexually assaulted after telling them she was menstruating.
One of the boys has been taken into custody, Delta State Police spokesperson Bright Edafe said.
All of the teenagers involved are minors, according to police.
The case became public after footage showing boys mocking the girl circulated online, prompting widespread concern and a police investigation.
The teenager told police that a friend had asked her to meet him at the hotel and promised that someone there would pay her transportation fare.
She said another boy met her on arrival and paid the fare before she entered a room where two teenagers were waiting.
The friend who had invited her was not there, she said.
According to her account, one of the boys became violent during an argument and ordered her to remove her clothes.
She alleges that the two then sexually assaulted her and used mobile phones to record what happened.
The girl said she pleaded for the recordings to be deleted but alleged that the boys demanded further sexual acts before agreeing to remove them.
She eventually left the hotel while they slept, according to Punch.
Because the complainant is a minor and the case concerns alleged sexual violence, The Trent is withholding the identities of all of the teenagers involved.
Police questioned the arrested boy about what happened in the hotel.
He acknowledged that he and another teenager had sexual intercourse with the girl but disputed parts of her account, including how many times the encounters occurred.
He also acknowledged being involved in recording the footage that later circulated publicly.
Those statements do not resolve whether the sexual activity was consensual. The girl has told police that it was not, and the matter remains under investigation.
Vanguard separately reported that the girl told police she had pleaded with the boys during the alleged assault and had informed them that she was menstruating.
Edafe said on Friday, October 2, 2026, that one of the principal suspects had been arrested and that the case would proceed through the criminal justice system.
Police have not announced the arrest of the second boy accused by the teenager.
The News Express report said the arrested teenager was 16, the same age as the complainant.
Authorities have not disclosed the name of the hotel, announced formal charges, or released details of any medical examination of the girl.
The allegations against the teenagers have not been adjudicated.
