Chairman Of Code Of Conduct Tribunal Shuns EFCC Invitation Over Corruption Charges

The Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) Danladi Umar, has refused to appear before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after he was charged with corruption.

According to Premium Times, the EFCC had on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 summoned Umar to appear before it on Friday, March 27, 2015 for allegedly demanding a N10 million bribe from a retired Comptroller of Customs, Rasheed Taiwo, who was standing trial before the CCT for not declaring his assets while he was in office.

According to Taiwo, he had paid N1.8 million to Umar’s personal account.

The report also states that a source who is highly placed at the EFCC had availed that Umar had earlier refused to honour an invitation for him to appear before the commission on Monday, December 13, 2013.

According to the Head of EFCC’s Media and Publicity Wilson Uwujaren, not only did Umar fail to appear before the commission, he also failed to notify the EFCC of his reason(s) for not honouring the invitation.

Following Umar’s refusal to appear before the EFCC, Uwujaren said “I will have to interact with the operatives on the case to know the way forward on his case.”

Asides the demand and collection of bribe, Umar is also being probed for maladministration and corruption at the CCT.
