Court Restores Lagos Speaker Obasa, Nullifies ‘Illegal’ Impeachment

IKEJA, Nigeria – Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly, has hailed the court’s recent judgment that nullified his removal from office, calling it a victory for the state legislature as an institution.

The judgment, delivered on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, by the Lagos High Court in Ikeja, reinstated Obasa, who had been ousted in January 2025 by a majority of lawmakers while he was abroad.

The lawmakers had accused him of gross misconduct and abuse of office, but Obasa, upon his return, rejected the decision, describing it as illegal and challenging it in court.

In a statement released by his media office, Obasa expressed his gratitude for the ruling and emphasized that it reinforced the unity and determination of the Lagos House of Assembly to continue working for the betterment of the people of Lagos and Nigeria.

“This is a victory for the Lagos House of Assembly as an institution and for our current and future members,” Obasa said.

“It reinforces the desire for us as members of the House to move ahead in unity and harmony and continue to work for the good of our people, our beloved Lagos State, and Nigeria.”

The court ruling, delivered by Justice Yetunde Pinheiro, nullified the proceedings and resolutions of the Lagos Assembly on Monday, January 13, 2025, that led to Obasa’s removal.

Following his ousting, Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda was appointed as the first female speaker of the House.

However, after serving for 49 days, Meranda stepped down during a plenary session on Monday, March 3, 2025, paving the way for Obasa’s re-nomination and re-election as Speaker.
