LAGOS, Nigeria — Aliko Dangote, president of the Dangote Group, said the planned expansion of the Dangote Refinery to a capacity of 1.4 million barrels per day is expected to employ up to 95,000 skilled workers at the height of construction.
Dangote made the disclosure on Friday, April 24, 2026 in Lagos during his induction as an Honorary Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering, describing the project as a key development in Nigeria’s industrial growth.
“At the peak of construction for this expansion, we expect to have about 95,000 skilled workers on site, and we will continue to grow,” Dangote said, adding that the recognition reflected the company’s commitment to engineering and workforce development.
Expansion Plans and Capacity
According to Dangote, the refinery expansion will increase output to 1.4 million barrels per day, positioning it to surpass the Jamnagar Refinery in India as the largest refinery globally upon completion.
He said the project would rely significantly on local expertise, creating opportunities for engineers, technicians and artisans.
“The scale of this expansion reflects our confidence in Nigerian capacity and our belief that Africa has the ability to build world-class infrastructure that meets global standards,” he said.
Economic Impact
The expansion is expected to contribute to broader economic activity, including support for local manufacturing and increased participation in the oil and gas value chain.
Dangote said the project would also help improve fuel supply, reduce reliance on imported petroleum products and contribute to foreign exchange savings.
Recognition by Engineering Body
Speaking at the event, Rahamon Bello, president of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering, said the honour recognised both Dangote’s achievements and his influence on future professionals.
“What makes this recognition fitting is not only what has been built, but what has been inspired,” Bello said, adding that Dangote’s work continues to motivate engineers and entrepreneurs.
The refinery expansion forms part of the company’s broader strategy to advance industrial development in Nigeria and across Africa.
