David Mark Condemns ‘Organised’ Killings in Benue, Urges Vigilante Action

ABUJA, Nigeria – David Mark, the former President of the Senate, has condemned the recent attacks in Otukpo and Ado Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Benue State, which resulted in the deaths of at least 15 people.

The attacks, which occurred on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, targeted Otobi-Akpa and Emichi in Otukpo LGA, and Utonkon in Ado LGA, leaving the local communities in shock and mourning.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser, Paul Mumeh, Mark described the killings as “one too many” and urged security operatives to rise to the challenge and restore order.

He emphasized that the attacks were no longer just isolated incidents, but part of a larger, coordinated effort that appeared to be “organised and premeditated.”

“The situation in parts of Benue state today cannot be said to be ordinary or accidental,” Mark said.

“It seems to me that it is an organised and premeditated action. We can no longer stand to watch our people killed needlessly for no just cause.”

Mark also called for local communities to take more proactive measures to safeguard their safety.

He suggested that residents form vigilance groups to complement the work of security agencies in protecting lives and property.

He stressed the importance of distinguishing between legitimate residents and potential invaders, urging the people of Benue to remain vigilant while continuing to offer hospitality to genuine residents.

“As much as our people should accommodate others in our communities, we must as a matter of necessity differentiate between legitimate residents and invaders,” he said.

While encouraging the people to remain calm, Mark urged them to cooperate with security forces working to restore peace in the region.

He also expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased.

Mark’s statement follows his earlier warning on April 7, when he cautioned against reprisals after a series of attacks on Benue communities by suspected terrorists.

His call for unity and peace reflects the growing concern over the rising insecurity in the region, which has left many residents feeling vulnerable and helpless.
