Man Spots His Own Obituary Poster While Passing The Streets In Edo (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

Must read

Shocked is an understatement to what a 65-year-old man felt when he saw his own obituary posters on the streets of Okunmwun community in Ovia North East LGA of Edo State.

The man identified as Clifford Osagie Osawaru, popularly known as Osasco, pulled out one of the posters which was captioned “Gone Too Soon” while narrating his ordeal to newsmen in the state on Thursday, August 13, 2015.

Osawaru, a father of 13, revealed that he was disturbed after he received several phone calls from family members and friends who informed him that his death posters were everywhere in town.

The man vehemently stated that he is very much healthy and alive and wondered why anyone would print his obituary while he is still breathing.

Although he explained that after he was made a patron, he had some issues with some members of the community who illegally sold lands without the consent of the elders and were later restrained by a court order after his intervention.

Referring to the names of his relatives printed on the poster, Osawaru pointed out that the name written as his wife was not his wife.

He said, ‘When I am alive, they said I am dead. This is not wife at all.”

Calling on security agencies to some to his aid, the overly surprised man said he had served the community for over 20 years and didn’t deserve to be treated in such a manner by whosoever.

He said, “I was made the patron of the community by the Odionwerie and the elders. But some youths abandoned their jobs and focused their minds on selling land with fake papers in our community without the consent of the elders and myself.

“So, the Odionwerie and I went to court and restrained them from selling land. Then they said that I was the one behind it (preventing them from selling the land).

“That was why they printed this paper (obituary). Yesterday (Thursday), my relation told me about it and sent me a copy. So, I went to the Area Command to report to the police.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Stephen Onwochei, who confirmed the incident, described it as a “case of threat to life.”

Onwochei, however, assured that the command would commence investigation into the matter.

“The fellow whose obituary was published in writing, as I speak, has lodged a petition and we have received it and we are investigating that petition thoroughly.

“Suffice it to say that this type of threat to life comes under Section 323 of the Criminal Code which provides what I may call a strict liability offence.

“The investigation shall be carried out and it is my hope that those behind it shall be brought to book. Whatever discrepancies they have, which is not of immediate consideration now, should not be to the extent of going to publish the obituary of a man who is still alive,” he said.
