Despite Endorsements, Speaker Obasa’s Son Drops Out of Agege Chairmanship Bid

LAGOS, Nigeria – Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, son of Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, has withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmanship primaries for Agege Local Government, despite widespread grassroots support and endorsements from key party figures.

His name was omitted from the final list of 432 aspirants cleared by the APC Lagos State Electoral Committee for the Saturday, May 10, 2025, primaries, which will precede the Saturday, July 12, 2025, local government elections.

The screening, held from April 29 to May 3 at the party’s secretariat in Ogba, resulted in the disqualification or voluntary withdrawal of 38 aspirants out of 470.

Though official reasons for some exclusions ranged from lack of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to missing party membership documentation and certificate irregularities, party insiders suggest that Abdul-Ganiyu’s withdrawal was influenced by high-level political intervention, allegedly involving President Bola Tinubu, the party’s national leader.

His withdrawal, sources say, was not linked to any documentation issues.

Rather, it is believed to be a strategic move to maintain internal party equilibrium ahead of the general restructuring of the APC in Lagos State.

Abdul-Ganiyu, who boasts an impressive academic and professional track record, had emerged as a frontrunner in the race, bolstered by strong backing from Agege political stakeholders.

His campaign was publicly endorsed by Ganiyu Egunjobi, the incumbent council chairman, and Vice Chairman Oluwagbenga Abiola.

Abiola, a loyalist of Speaker Obasa, earlier stepped down from the contest, citing loyalty to the Speaker.

“I will never go against my leader, Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa,” Abiola said, adding that Obasa had mentored him since 2015.

A slate of councillorship aspirants aligned with Abdul-Ganiyu’s proposed leadership team also committed to staying in the race, raising questions about the future of Obasa’s political structure in Agege following his son’s exit.

Political observers believe the move signals shifting power dynamics in Lagos politics, especially within the ruling APC, as party leaders attempt to balance local ambition with national cohesion.

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has confirmed that elections will be conducted in all 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), covering 57 chairmanship and 376 councillorship positions.
