A family member of the victim identified as Juliana Agoma, according to the Police, revealed that the family was asked to state that she was dead by an unnamed Non-Governmental Organisation.

Spokesperson for the Force, Frank Mba, told journalists in Lagos, yesterday, that a team of policemen from the Federal Special Anti Robbery Squad, accompanied by their colleagues in the International Police, INTERPOL, who visited Miss Agomo’s home town in Tchaada community, in Ifaguin area of Benin Republic, could neither locate the traditional home where she was said to have been treated nor the grave where her remains were allegedly buried.

The team reportedly also visited Tchaadar divisional police station and discovered that Agomo’s demise was not reported.

According to Mba, “they equally interacted with the traditional ruler in charge of Julian’s community whose responsibilities include issuance of death certificates, and were told that Juliana was still alive.

“The traditional ruler actually invited the deceased’s twin brother, Kehinde, for an interview during which he confirmed that his twin sister is alive and is living in another community in Benin Republic.”

Following the findings, Mba stated that the Police were left with no option than to charge those arrested over the torture for attempted murder, informing however that the door was still open to new evidence and facts on the matter.

He said: “The truth remains that we will be making mockery of the law and our investigative skills if we charge a man to court without a clear evidence of death, without evidence of a death certificate, without a post mortem report, without sighting or seeing the body of the person that is alleged to have been killed.

“What we did was to go to the next most serious charge we can lay our hands on and that is clearly a charge of attempted murder. However, we are open to new evidence and facts but for now, we will act within the law and not outside it.”
