The freak weather tore through Serignan-Plage in southern France destroying hotels, homes and businesses yesterday.

The whirlwind ripped roofs from properties with one couple being crushed by the rubble.

Emergency services rushed to save a couple and their seven-year-old child. The youngster suffered minor injuries while its parents, who were found 30 minutes later, miraculously emerged from the catastrophe unscathed.

A clean up operation is underway today with emergency services and council employees drafted in to secure roofs and make buildings safe.

They have been seen trying to piece roofs back together against a deluge of rain and winds.

A hotel was annihilated with debris crumbling from the walls and ceiling, while swathes of trees have fallen in the town’s roads.

Power lines were torn down while residents had to cower from bins, billboards and fences flying in all directions.

The town’s mayor Jacques Dupin, said two campsites had been affected. He said the council’s technical services teams were helping residents along with the emergency services.

Mini tornados are said to be relatively common in France, with the country said to suffer about 100 a year.
