Fuel Subsidy Removal: Nigerian Army Increases Troops’ Ration Cash Allowance from N1,000 to N1,200

Must read

ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Army has approved increasing the ration cash allowance for soldiers, from N1,000 to N1,200.

The decision comes in the wake of President Bola Tinubu’s removal of fuel subsidy, which has led to a rise in prices of goods and services across the country.

The approval, dated July 27, was disclosed in a memo signed by Major-General Emmanuel Emekah on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, Taoreed Lagbaja.

Officers confirmed the memo’s authenticity, although how it was leaked on social media remains unclear.

While the increase is separate from monthly salaries, dissatisfaction is already brewing among soldiers over the perceived inadequacy of the increment.

A lieutenant speaking anonymously told journalists that members of his unit were expecting an increase of up to N5,000 in ration allowance, given their already low salaries, with most earning less than N70,000 per month.

The announcement of the ration allowance increase coincides with a time of great unrest in Nigeria, where the removal of fuel subsidy has led to a sharp rise in commodity prices.

Protests have erupted across the country, with labor unions calling on the president to reconsider the policy, which has been in place since the 1970s.

The increase in ration allowance for soldiers, though seemingly minor, reflects the broader economic pressures faced by Nigerians following the subsidy removal.

The discontent among soldiers over the increase highlights a growing concern over the standard of living and remuneration within the military.

While the Nigerian Army’s spokesperson has not yet commented on the announcement, the situation further underscores the Nigerian government’s challenges in balancing fiscal responsibility with the welfare of its military and citizens.

As tensions over the fuel subsidy continue to escalate, the government’s handling of the issue may be a defining moment for President Tinubu’s administration.

The impact on various sectors, including the military, adds complexity to a situation fraught with economic and social challenges.

The response to these concerns will likely have long-lasting implications for the stability and prosperity of the country.
