Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama on Friday ordered an official inquiry into the country’s trouble-scarred World Cup campaign.
The ‘Black Stars’ went out of the finals on Thursday beaten 2-1 by Portugal which had been preceded by the sending home of two of its biggest stars Sulley Muntari and Kevin-Prince Boateng for disciplinary reasons.
Muntari, who has a record of poor behaviour, had assaulted a member of the management team while Boateng had verbally abused coach Kwesi Appiah — part of the fallout over a row about unpaid bonuses that had seen Mahama intervene personally and send $3million in cash by chartered jet to Brazil to placate the players.
“We need to constitute a commission to shine the light on Ghana’s World Cup campaign,” Mahama, said in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea on the sidelines of an African Union leaders’ summit.
“We have to see the whole process through to the end.”
Mahama, 53, also called for a complete overhaul of the team while imploring Ghanaians to continue to support the Black Stars despite their early elimination.
Ghana had hoped to emulate their performance of the 2010 edition when they reached the quarter-finals.
They were denied a place in the semis as a goalbound effort in the final minute of extra-time was ‘saved’ with his hand by Luis Suarez — who was sent off — and Asamoah Gyan missed the resulting penalty.
