ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Government of Nigeria has disclosed that 13,597,057 social media accounts were shut down in 2024 for violations ranging from offensive content to breaches of the Code of Practice for Internet platforms.
The announcement came in the Code of Practice 2024 Compliance Report, submitted by leading technology companies including Google, Microsoft, TikTok, and other service providers.
The Code of Practice was jointly issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
According to the report, a total of 58,909,112 offensive posts were taken down across platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter).
In addition, 754,629 formal complaints were lodged by Nigerian users, with 420,439 contents later reinstated after successful appeals.
Hadiza Umar, spokesperson for NITDA, described the findings as “a significant step towards fostering a safer and responsible digital environment for Nigerian users.”
She added: “The compliance reports provide valuable insights into the platforms’ efforts to address user safety concerns in line with the Code of Practice and their community guidelines. We remain committed to working with industry players, civil society, and regulatory partners to further strengthen user safety measures, enhance digital literacy, and promote trust and transparency in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.”
The report commended Google, Microsoft, and TikTok for their adherence to Nigerian regulations, which require major platforms to submit annual compliance reports on harmful content management, transparency, and user safety protocols.
