ABUJA, Nigeria – Amid swirling speculations of his potential departure from the Labour Party (LP) before the 2027 elections, Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate in the previous election, has made a clear statement regarding his political future.
Speaking to journalists in Gombe State after inaugurating a borehole in Tike Pantami’s ram market, Obi firmly dismissed rumours that he is considering joining the Social Democratic Party to further his political ambitions.
The speculation had gained traction following comments by Benson Upah, spokesman for the Nigeria Labour Congress, who noted that Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, has the liberty to leave the LP, emphasising that the party would not hinder his decision.
“Mr. Obi has the freedom to choose. It’s his choice if he decides to leave the party,” Upah stated, adding, “Peter Obi, however, is always a benefit if he decides to stay.”
Responding to these comments and the surrounding speculation, Obi expressed his dedication to peace and unity, stating, “No, there isn’t [any intention to leave the Labour Party]. I enjoy and support peace. We are one people, in my opinion. We should focus on achieving peace, and I think we can handle any issue.”
This statement highlights Obi’s commitment to addressing internal party issues and fostering a united front for the betterment of Nigeria.
In addition to clarifying his position within the LP, Obi also addressed questions regarding a potential collaboration with Nasir El-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna State.

Emphasising his broader concern for the nation’s welfare, Obi remarked, “Well, I’m more interested in Nigeria’s success today than tomorrow. We are always concentrating on the election rather than what Nigerians are going through. My commitment is about Nigerians living in a better society, given a better life, and that’s my concern.”
Obi’s comments come at a time when Nigeria faces several challenges, including a recent increase in electricity tariffs for Band A consumers by the Federal Government through the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.
Obi urged stakeholders to adopt strategic measures to address these challenges, particularly focusing on the impact on less affluent areas. “
Everywhere in the world, those living in Band A areas pay more while those in rural areas are subsidised. That is how it works,” he stated, calling for thoughtful solutions to the nation’s pressing issues.
As Obi reaffirms his commitment to the Labour Party and the well-being of Nigerians, his words serve as a reminder of the importance of unity and strategic action in facing the country’s challenges.
