ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Inter-Party Advisory Council’s (IPAC) chairman, Yabagi Sani, has called on the Department of State Service (DSS) to identify and apprehend the individuals behind the alleged plans to install an interim government in the country.
The DSS had released a statement on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, stating that it had discovered a plot by “misguided” political actors to disregard the constitution and establish an interim government.
In response, Sani urged the DSS to go beyond merely announcing the plot and take action against the conspirators.
During an appearance on a monitored Channels Television program, Sani expressed his disappointment with the DSS’s approach.
“To say the least, it is an embarrassment because I believe that the DSS, the agency that is in charge of gathering intelligence and then passing intelligence to other agencies, are supposed to take action. And I don’t think it serves the purpose of this country for the DSS to come and make this pronouncement in the manner they are making it,” Sani said.
Sani emphasised the importance of law enforcement agencies demonstrating that no one is above the law, as this would serve as a deterrent to others who might have plans to undermine democracy in the country.
Yabagi Sani, who was the presidential candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) in the February 25 presidential election, stressed that democracy is too precious and must be protected by security agencies.
He cited the example of the United States, where action was taken when former President Donald Trump attempted to disrupt the inauguration of President Joe Biden.
Sani urged the DSS to take more decisive action: “I believe as much as we commend the effort of the DSS, I think they should go beyond that because as citizens, what can we do?”
