JUST IN: CAF Official Dies Following Riot After Nigeria Vs Ghana Match In Abuja

An official of the Confederation of African Football, CAF, has died following a post-match riot that erupted after Nigeria and Ghana Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup play-off match.

Dr Joseph Kabungo, who was the doping officer for the match held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Tuesday, March 29, 2022, died after being caught up in a stampede at the stadium.

Nigerian fans took to the field in riot as the match ended in a 1-1 draw which saw the Ghanaian team qualify for the 2022 World Cup while Nigeria bowed out.

Kabungo was rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead.

Kabungo, a Zambian medical practitioner, was reported to have lost consciousness after he was beaten and stepped on as fans try to make their way out of the stadium due to stampede.

In a post on Twitter by British-Nigerian journalist, Osasu Obayiuwana, his death was confirmed after he was rushed to the hospital.

Neither officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) nor CAF has confirmed the official’s death.
