The killing of lions in the country may soon be an offence, if a lawyer, who dragged the federal government to court over the non-construction of a sanctuary for the breeding and protection of Nigerian lions by the federal government has his requests granted.
The plaintiff, a lawyer, Chukwunonso Daniel Ogbe, through his counsel, Mr. Daniel Onyeonagu Esq., approached a federal high court sitting in Abuja and asked it to order the federal government to commence the construction of a sanctuary as a matter of urgent national importance, for the breeding and conservation of Nigerian lions that are about becoming extinct.
According to the court process obtained by LEADERSHIP, the plaintiff joined Architect Darius Dickson Ishaku, Supervising minister of Environment, Federal Ministry of Environment and the National Assembly and defendants in the matter.
The plaintiff in the suit is asking the court to grant the following reliefs:
A declaration that the failure and/or inability of the Respondents to make provision for the construction of a sanctuary for the breeding and protection of Nigerian lions, amounts to violation of the right to a general satisfactory environment favourable to the development of Nigerian citizens, as guaranteed under article 24 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act.
An order of the court mandating the 1st Respondent to commence the construction of a sanctuary as a matter of urgent national importance for the breeding and conservation of Nigerian lions that is about going extinct.
An order of the court, mandating the 2nd respondent to make adequate budgetary provision for the 1st respondent to carry out the construction of a sanctuary for the protection of Nigerian lions.
