CINCINNATI, USA — A man is in custody after property was damaged at the Cincinnati home of Vice President JD Vance early Monday, according to the United States Secret Service.
No injuries were reported, and Vance and his family were not present at the time of the incident.
Secret Service officials said agents detained an adult male shortly after midnight on Monday, January 5, 2026, after he allegedly caused damage to the exterior of the residence, including broken windows.
The man, whose name has not been released, was subsequently taken into custody by the Cincinnati Police Department.
“The residence was unoccupied at the time of the incident, and the Vice President and his family were not in Ohio,” the Secret Service said in a statement.
A spokesperson for Vance said the vice president and his family had already returned to Washington, D.C., before the episode.
Vance posted a message on X later on Monday acknowledging the incident and thanking law enforcement.
“I appreciate everyone’s well wishes about the attack at our home,” he wrote, adding that “a crazy person tried to break in by hammering the windows.” He said he was “grateful to the Secret Service and the Cincinnati police for responding quickly,” and confirmed that his family “weren’t even home” at the time.
I appreciate everyone’s well wishes about the attack at our home. As far as I can tell, a crazy person tried to break in by hammering the windows. I’m grateful to the secret service and the Cincinnati police for responding quickly.
We weren’t even home as we had returned…

The Secret Service said it is working with the Cincinnati Police Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office as prosecutors review potential charges.
No motive has been disclosed, and authorities have not released additional details about the suspect.
Vance had recently been in Cincinnati over the weekend, according to his office, but had returned to the capital before the incident occurred.
Officials said the investigation remains active.
