The Martial Show: Manchester United Defeats Liverpool As £36m Teenager Shines

Must read

Manchester United on Saturday evening defeated their old time rivals, Liverpool at Old Trafford. The game which ended 3-1 saw David De Gea return to the goalpost for the hosts for the first time since last season. Marouane Fellaini started upfront as the lone striker in the absence of injured Wayne Rooney.

Both teams had a poor display in the first half as none of the teams could boast of a shot on target as at half time.

The second half began on a more positive note as it took just four minutes for Daley Blind to score a brilliant goal from an even more brilliant Juan Mata freekick which squared the ball for the Dutchman. Red Devils returnee, De Gea made some great save to maintain his club’s lead.

The game’s second goal was for Manchester United and it came from the penalty spot. Gomez’ sliding tackle brought Ander Herrera down in the visitors penalty box and the Spaniard walked up to score a well taken penalty.

Liverpool kept on knocking at the door of Manchester United’s defence and it eventually paid off in the 86th minute. Rising in the air, Christian Benteke fired in a bicycle kick into the right corner of the net for what was arguably the best goal of the evening.

Any hopes of Liverpool staging a remarkable comeback were immediately dashed as Manchester United’s £36m teenager, Anthony Martial scored a brilliant goal two minutes later. The relatively unknown 19-year-old who had been introduced earlier in the second half dribbled past three defenders before  curling a shot past Skrtel.
