A mother who was the poster girl for the pro-gun lobby has been accidentally shot in the back by her toddler son.
Jamie Gilt, 31, was taken to hospital after the four-year-old found her loaded pistol in the back seat of her truck as she drove through Putnam County, Florida.
The little boy then pointed the .45 semi-automatic handgun at his mother and pulled the trigger, firing a round through the car seat and into his mother’s back.
Gilt survived the blast and was able to flag down a sheriff’s deputy who took her to hospital.
The sheriff found the .45 gun on the floor of the car and said they were satisfied the gun had definitely been fired inside the vehicle.
Putman County Sheriff’s office spokesman Joseph Wells said: ‘As the deputy slowed to check on the vehicle, he observed an adult female in the driver’s seat motioning to him as if she needed assistance.
