Nigeria Prisons Denies Melaye’s Claim Of Jailbreak In Kogi

Must read

The Kogi State Command of the Nigeria Prisons Service on Thursday, March 29, 2018, stated that prison formations in the state did not record any jailbreak, saying all its facilities are safe, intact and peaceful.

Martyns Apebende, the controller of Prisons in the state, in an interactive session with journalists in Lokoja, clarified that report in some electronic media that the two principal suspects in the case of Senator Dino Melaye escaped from its custody is not true.

He said that the duo of Kabiru Seidu, aka Osama and Nuhu Salisu, aka Small, who escaped from a police cell on Wednesday morning was never brought to any prison in Kogi State.

He noted that apart from the prisons, other security agencies with the power of arrest also maintain detention facilities where suspects are temporarily kept for processing in court before being taken to prisons custody if so pronounced.

Apebende, while appreciating the cordial relationship between the prisons service in the state and the media, appealed for verification of information to avoid “spreading misleading information that could create unnecessary anxiety in otherwise peaceful quarters”.

He assured that prisons staff members remain committed to the course of inmates’ reformation and rehabilitation in line with global best practices.
