ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu has inaugurated a newly constructed Nigerian Army Barracks in Asokoro, Abuja, a facility designed to significantly enhance the welfare and living conditions of Army personnel.

The state-of-the-art barracks, named after the president, symbolises a major step forward in addressing accommodation challenges and providing modern infrastructure for military personnel and their families.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony on Thursday, January 23, 2025, President Tinubu emphasised his administration’s commitment to prioritising the well-being of Nigeria’s military forces.

“This project is a testament to our dedication to improving the lives of those who dedicate their lives to defending our nation. Our troops are the heroes of Nigeria, and their resilience and steadfastness in safeguarding the country inspire us all,” the President is quoted as saying in a press statement signed by Maor General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director, Nigerian Army Public Relations.

President Tinubu also praised the Army’s leadership for its vision and execution of the project, urging them to sustain the momentum by maintaining the facilities and continuing to focus on troop welfare.

A Symbol of Gratitude

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt Gen Olufemi Oluyede, expressed deep appreciation for the President’s exceptional support for the Nigerian Army.

He noted that naming the barracks in honour of President Tinubu was a reflection of the Army’s gratitude for his efforts to resolve housing challenges and strengthen the operational capabilities of the force.

Acknowledging the contributions of his predecessors, Lt Gen Farouk Yahaya and the late Lt Gen Taoreed Lagbaja, who initiated the project, Lt Gen Oluyede stated that phases 1 and 2 of the barracks have been completed, providing residential accommodations for 614 personnel, including 170 officers and 444 soldiers.

He added, “The completion of phases 3 and 4 is a priority, and we are confident that, with the continued support of the Federal Government, these phases will be realised expeditiously.”

Commitment to Security

The COAS reiterated the Army’s loyalty to the Constitution and its dedication to ensuring national security and socio-economic development.

He called on both the government and the public to continue supporting military personnel, whose sacrifices are essential for a secure and prosperous Nigeria.

In a further demonstration of his administration’s commitment to strengthening the nation’s security infrastructure, President Tinubu also performed the groundbreaking ceremony for an ultra-modern Armed Forces Complex in Abuja.

A Step Towards a Secure Future

The dual events highlight the Federal Government’s determination to provide the Nigerian military with the resources and facilities required to carry out its constitutional mandate.

The projects aim to create a supportive environment for the Armed Forces, fostering morale and operational effectiveness.

As President Tinubu underscored during the ceremony, “Our commitment to the welfare and professional excellence of our troops is unwavering. Together, we will build a safer and stronger Nigeria.”
