HAZERSWOUDE DORP, Netherlands — A biology teacher in the Netherlands surprised her pupils by removing her outer clothing during an anatomy lesson to reveal a specially designed bodysuit displaying the human body’s internal organs, muscles, and skeletal structure.
Debby Heerkens, a teacher at Groene Hart Rijnwoude school in Hazerswoude Dorp, used the illustrated clothing to demonstrate the location of different anatomical structures and help her students understand how the human body is organised.
The classroom demonstration attracted international attention after images and video footage of the lesson began circulating online in October 2015.
Students Surprised by Classroom Demonstration
Heerkens stood before her pupils and began removing her outer clothing, initially leaving them uncertain about what she was doing.
Beneath her clothes, however, she was wearing a fitted outfit printed with detailed illustrations of the human body.
The teaching costume incorporated separate layers depicting the body’s muscles, internal organs, and skeletal system, allowing her to demonstrate the relationship between different anatomical structures.
Speaking to CNN, Heerkens described her pupils’ initial reaction to the demonstration.
“At first they were a little bit in shock because they thought ‘the teacher is taking off her clothes,’ until, they saw what was underneath.”
Once the students understood the purpose of the exercise, Heerkens continued the lesson using the anatomical illustrations on her clothing.
The demonstration allowed pupils to observe the relative positions of the body’s internal structures on a human figure rather than relying exclusively on textbook illustrations.
Teacher Uses Visual Approach to Explain Anatomy
Heerkens said she adopted the teaching method to make the study of human anatomy more accessible to her pupils.
By using her own body as a visual teaching model, she sought to help students identify major organs and understand their positions within the human body.
The layered outfit also allowed her to show how the skeletal and muscular systems relate to the body’s internal organs.
The teacher explained that her decision was motivated by a desire to engage students more effectively with the subject.
Her classroom demonstration subsequently attracted attention beyond the school after footage of the lesson was shared online.
