‘Operation Crush’: Abia’s Governor Otti Unveils New Blueprint Targeting Insecurity

Must read

UMUAHIA, Nigeria – Abia’s Governor, Alex Otti, launched the “Operation Crush” initiative on Tuesday, August 8, 2023.

The move, unveiled at the Trademore Event Center in Umuahia, is an aggressive stance against the increasing criminal activities in the state.

Emphasizing the administration’s no-compromise approach to crime, Otti described security as the bedrock of lasting prosperity. “This initiative manifests our unwavering pledge to peace and stability in Abia,” the governor remarked.

The operation will feature a joint task force with representatives from multiple security agencies, including the Nigerian Police Force, Army, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Directorate of State Security, and the Nigerian Navy.

Otti outlined the objective: to quickly pinpoint, evaluate, and counteract security threats anywhere in the state. “The mission,” he clarified, “is to forcefully tackle kidnappings, armed robberies, and other violent offenses throughout Abia.”

In light of recurring criminal activities paralyzing economic and social endeavors, particularly in communities within the Umunneochi and Isuikwuato local government areas, the operation will pay special attention to these regions.

Referring to the recent attack on Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu, the Commissioner for Trade and Commerce, which resulted in the deaths of two security officers, Otti saw it as a direct challenge to the state administration.

He urged the security personnel to be unyielding in their approach against criminals but cautioned against unnecessary civilian harassment.

He asked community leaders to assist in intelligence gathering underlining the significance of community cooperation.

Moreover, he noted the government’s efforts in job creation, emphasizing that lack of employment should not be a route to crime.

Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, State Commissioner of Police, praised the government’s prioritization of security and its essential role in societal progress.

He assured everyone that the security agencies would work tirelessly to realize the governor’s vision for a safe state.

Prof. Kenneth Kalu, Secretary to the State Government, viewed the operation as an affirmation of the government’s dedication to the safety and well-being of Abians and potential investors.

The ceremony concluded with providing 20 Toyota Hilux Vans to the security personnel, reinforcing the state’s commitment to the new security initiative.
