ABUJA, Nigeria – In a swift move, the Nigerian Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to appoint 20 special advisers.
The president’s request was read by Senate President Ahmad Lawan on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, on the floor of the upper legislative chamber.
President Tinubu’s letter arrived without the accompanying names of the prospective advisers, an unusual move for such requests that typically include detailed information about the individuals being considered.
“The president did not list the names of the 20 special advisers,” Senate President Ahmad Lawan revealed while addressing his fellow Senators.
Despite this unusual procedure, the upper legislative chamber did not hesitate in approving.
The outgoing president of the senate went on to defend the decision, stating, “We understand the urgency and importance of these positions. The Senate trusts the President’s judgement in making the right selections. We will certainly scrutinize the chosen advisers when the time comes.”
