Robbers Kill 2 Policemen, Steal Millions From ATMs In Enugu

Must read

Armed robbers, last weekend, attacked a bank branch in the premises of University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, carting away millions of naira from the bank’s Automated Teller Machines, ATMs.

It was gathered that two policemen on duty that night were killed while the private guards were bound and locked up inside the strongroom in the bank.

But a lady, who was in the company of the private security guards at the time of the robbery, sustained gunshot wounds.

The incident which occurred barely one month after a similar robbery attack on another bank branch on the campus, Vanguard gathered, has generated anxiety among residents of the university community.

Sources said the dare-devil robbers took advantage of the downpour on Friday night to launch the attack.

Said the source: “The robbers came in the middle of the night and shot the two policemen. One of them died on the spot while the other died on the way to hospital.

“After that, they ordered the other guards into the strongroom and tied them together. With this, they operated without hinderance and succeeded in removing the three ATMs.

“We also learnt that a girlfriend of one of the security men was equally shot. They are believed to be the gang behind the  attack on a nearby bank one month ago. It is a strange development because we have not witnessed such criminal activity on the campus.”

Three big holes from where the ATMs were removed by the gang were seen when Vanguard visited the bank, yesterday.

The machines were said to have been fully loaded with cash ahead of the weekend withdrawals by customers and this may have attracted the bandits who reportedly spent sometime in the bank without being challenged.

Contacted, spokesman of the Enugu State Police Command, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the robbery but said detectives had swung into action to unravel what actually happened that night.

Urging residents of the state to remain calm, the police spokesman said the police were on top of the situation.

“We are handling the incident as effort is on to unravel the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident,” Amaraizu stated.
